Custom street cars – a wide and diverse tribe.
Custom street cars are also known as street machines. These cars have been customized but still conform to the requirements for registration for driving on the road. As with so much in the custom car world, there is no one definition of what constitutes a custom street car, but it is often regarded that if you are going to bother to apply the label you have a vehicle with a high performance engine.
Street cars have many sub-groups. One is the customized cars used for street racing. Starting off as a clandestine activity in urban backstreets, street racing is now an organised sport, though there is still a large element of illegal street racing throughout the world. These vehicles are primarily customized with a view to making them faster, with some drivers installing nitrous oxide combination engines. There is an element among street racing that does focus on the visuals, with many sub-groups that express themselves through colour choice, custom paint jobs and choice of accessories such as under body lighting.
Another distinctive sub-set of street cars are street rods. Reminiscent of the movie ‘American Graffiti’ these are highly modified vehicles built prior to 1948 that meet the specifications for being road registrable. Popular street rods are old style roadsters and coupes, either reconditioned originals (usually referred to as ‘classics’ rather than custom cars) or fibreglass body reproductions. Street rods can be trucks as well as cars. Similar to a street rod but of a later vintage are muscle cars, which are various types of American cars built between 1964 to 1972. While most manufacturers released one model that could be considered a muscle car, the Pontiac is probably considered the benchmark muscle car. While many of these cars are now customized with a view to looking their best, there is still a strong element of performance with these cars, and they can be very popular for drag racing.
