Mention the phrase ‘custom cars’ and the picture evoked is usually a fuel-guzzling V8 or an extremely expensive sports car. This need not be the case, as any car can be customized. Customizing cars is growing in popularity around the world. This hobby allows the car owner to combine creativity with performance, and is something that can be built upon, adding accessories or making changes when time and budget allow.
The automotive ‘aftermarket’ – specialization in selling add-on and custom parts- is exploding in an attempt to meet the needs of the car customization boom. The two broad categories in this market are performance and cosmetic. Performance refers to making changes that will make cars run smoother, faster, quieter, louder, better – whatever quality you are after. Cosmetic refers to how the car looks, and can apply to the exterior or interior of the car. There are a multitude of ways to change the appearance of your vehicle, from a new paint job to simply changing the seat covers and floor mats. Many owners choose to follow a theme, making sure their customization is colour coordinated, or that all parts come from the same brand. Many manufacturers have seen the sales potentials in cosmetic customization, and there are more products appearing in auto stores each week.

Everyone involved in the field has the story of someone who started out just making one or two changes to their stock standard car, and ended up spending more on customizing their car than they originally paid for it. Also similar to many pursuits, there are custom car clubs worldwide, many specialising in certain aspects such as muscle cars or cars from different manufacturers.
